Advanced Class II for I Ching (易經高班II)–Lecture 3

Minda and I joined Prof. Peng’s (彭泓基教授) advanced class II for I Ching (易經) and Lecture 3 was held on 23rd Mar 2024. Today’s topic was “I Ching and Wisdom of Man Being” (易經與做人的智慧).

Firstly, Prof. Peng compared the application of Eastern and Western management. He said that Western management focused on handling matters but Eastern management focused on people themselves.

Western management mainly handled the people (e.g. Human Resource) and projects. I Ching taught us how to face others and yourself.

Then Prof. Peng briefed the characteristics of Chinese Culture including Harmony Society, Human Relations, Closeness and Distance, Loyalty and Competence.

The most important is Social Norms () that included in Confucianism.

The diagram showed the relationship among Survive, Living and Life (生存、生活、生命).

After that He then explains the pursuit of wisdom and the path is from surface to deep and then understood the nature.

Prof. Peng also introduced how to be excellence management talent under Chinese culture.

The Confucian ethical and moral system centered on "Benevolence / Humanity ()" that is the essence. It is one part of Prof. Peng’s thesis that combined I Ching and Confucianism.

Finally, Prof. Peng discussed the litigation hexagram (訟卦).

The hexagram of litigation could be changed in mutual hexagram (互卦) that indicated different trend of change.

Based on the description of litigation hexagram (訟卦), some suggestions were proposed to solve the conflict.

After the class, classmates had lunch with Prof. Peng together.

Then Minda come with So Easy to Huawei shop for managing her apps problem.

In that night, Minda and I had dinner in PolyU restaurant.

PolyU Career Fair 2024 started from 19th to 22nd March 2024 in PolyU Podium. There are more than 300 employers from various industries with more than 1000 graduate job and internship opportunities. I visited today and met some friends.

I met Mr. Henry Lee, my old colleague in EPA Centre and we took a photo in front of his booth for memory.

One of his businesses in STEM education related to 3D printing.

Let students to draw what they want and then print it as a gift.

I visited many booths including GP, KOLN3D, HKPC, etc.

I also met BCH cohort Mr. YIP Wai Yuen but forgot to take a photo.  Moreover, HKIE also supported the career fair. HKIE Hong Kong Engineering Week supported universities career fairs.

ISE x RIAM Seminar – Development and Assessment of Circular Economy Strategies

PolyU ISE and RIAM seminar named “Development and Assessment of Circular Economy” was held on 20th Mar 2024. Prof. Hwong-wen Ma (National Taiwan University) was guest speaker. His talk content structure was vision, principle, objective, strategy, goal, target and development of the circular economy.

In the beginning, Prof. Ma introduced “Vision” model named doughnut economics that the first circle is environmental ceiling and the second circle is social foundation. Its’ principle included resource efficient and climate neutral.

Then he explained the objective for resource and impact decoupling. The strategy named “Resource as a lever” was discussed that an integrated approach to managing energy, raw materials, environmental and financial resources on a sustainable and efficient basis over the full cycles of goods and services.

This strategy implemented as sustainable resource management (consumption and production) from green economy efficiency to risk management resilience.

And then the goal was “how much resource efficiency needed” that closed the gap by 50% to 70%. The target is retaining value through three models and they were “Circular Design”, “Optimal Use” and “Value Recovery”.

After that the business models were discussed from circular supplies to resource recovery. Circular Economy defined “Being restorative and regenerative by design, keeping products, components, and materials at their highest value at all times, through system-wide innovation of materials, products, business models and value chain.”

The evolution of the terms for circular economy was showed. I like the spaceship earth economics that implied earth is a spaceship.

Finally, the global trend on production, consumption, waste and secondary materials were mentioned. There were five directions included i) Product as focus, ii) Regulation and investment as driver, iii) Standardization as scalability promoter, iv) Digitalization as connecter, and v) Collaboration as path.

The summary diagram was demonstrated those directions relationship.

For circular economy, data collection is significant. Thus, digitalization and industry 4.0 are important technology to be employed.

Prof. Ma also stated the change role of EPD that more focused on resource efficiency together with environmental impacts.

Lastly, he introduced some research tools on the integration of assessment methods including product and material flow analysis, resource and waste input-output analysis, multimedia environmental fate modeling and life cycle assessment and risk assessment.

He demonstrated material flow analysis in Taiwan.

As well as, liking driving forces and consequences showed in Taiwan.

At the end, the broad agenda was introduced that included environment, society and economy.

In Q&A session, more than 100 participants joined this seminar online. I asked questions about i4.0 and economy as well as customer behavior for purchasing environment friendly product.

HKPC Lunch & Learn Talk - The Challenges of Generative AI in Intellectual Property Protection

I attended the HKPC Lunch & Learn Talk named “The Challenges of Generative AI in Intellectual Property Protection” (探討生成式AI在知識產權保護方面的挑戰). Dr. Albert So is the guest speaker and we had joined ANQ Congress together in last year.

Firstly, he briefed the background of IP protection ordinance in Hong Kong. IP included three areas and they were Copyright, Trademark and Patent.  Nature of Copyright included any article, music and art that no need for registration and effective once created.

Then Dr. Albert So stated the ownership of copyright that author is the first owner. If author is employed by company to create the items, employer had the copyright in default. For commissioned work, the contractor is the owner if not stated clearly in the contract agreement.

Restricted act by copyright included copy, distribution in public, open performance, broadcasting, etc. However, some statutory permitted acts had been allowed such as action not affected owner’s benefit and some special purposes (e.g. education, comments & research).

After that Dr. So briefed some legal IP aspects on Generative AI. Who would be responsible to the infringement that included AI Model Developer, AI Model User, Platform Service Provider and End User.

Finally, some cases were discussed. The first case was “Monkey-selfie copyright dispute”. Between 2011 and 2018, a series of disputes took place about the copyright status of selfies taken by Celebes crested macaques using equipment belonging to the British wildlife photographer David J. Slater. In December 2014, the United States Copyright Office stated that works created by a non-human, such as a photograph taken by a monkey, are not copyrightable. In April 2018, the appeals court ruled that animals cannot legally hold copyrights. Non-human is key words that included AI!

The second case was Edmond de Belamy that is a generative adversarial network (GAN) portrait painting constructed in 2018 by Paris-based arts-collective “Obvious”. In this case, Obvious received USD $432,500. Dr. Albert So mentioned that it could be employed the Doctrine of “Authorship Transfer” that person behind the AI who had control over the creative process if no infringement. Since the teaching draw were long time ago, it is not covered by copyright (more than 50 year after author pass away).

The last case was that a user requested Ultraman-related images from the AI platform, which was not named in reporting, the outputs were extremely similar to the plaintiff’s original creation. The Guangzhou Internet Court ruled that an AI company infringed on the plaintiff's "copyright and adaptation rights" to the Ultraman works while providing generative AI services, ordering the defendant to pay 10,000 yuan (about USD$1,389) in compensation to the plaintiff for the economic loss.

At the end, Dr. Albert So concluded that AI generative texts or diagrams may infringe copyright. So we needed to consider the context owner and country related ordinances, as well as, AI derives product.
